AUDITION DETAILS

THE HATMAKER'S WIFE | LAUREN YEE | April 17 - May 10, 2025

The Hatmaker’s Wife by Lauren Yee is a captivating grown-up fairy tale where reality and imagination intertwine, exploring themes of identity, family, love, and the distractions that pull us away from these things that matter most.

When a young woman and her boyfriend move into their new home, they uncover the magical history of its previous occupants: a distracted hatmaker and his long-suffering wife, who has left him, taking his beloved hat along with her. Through a whimsical and surreal narrative, the play redefines the concepts of family, home, and love, bending time and space in delightful ways.

The story unfolds with a large dose of magical realism—walls that literally talk, words that appear out of nowhere, a house that comes alive, and, obviously, a golem with a softness for Cheetos. A truly fantastical adventure, The Hatmaker’s Wife is a modern fable that is part ghost story, part fairy tale, showcasing Lauren Yee’s imaginative and humorous take on what it means to find real love.

CHARACTER DESCRIPTIONS

Hetchman - Age: 55 - 99/Ageless

Our hero. Hetchman the hatmaker. He wears a hat. Curmudgeonly. Despite being “old,” they are not necessarily old old. They are old in the way your math teacher could be fifty or ninety. Ageless. They also all speak with a quasi-Eastern European accent.

Hetchman’s Wife - Age: 55 - 99/Ageless

Wife of Hetchman. Nondescript. Does she have a name? Who knows. Despite being “old,” they are not necessarily old old. They are old in the way your math teacher could be fifty or ninety. Ageless. They also all speak with a quasi-Eastern European accent.

Meckel - Age: 55 - 99/Ageless

Hetchman’s neighbor and only friend. Meckel is cheerful, popular, and kind. He is the opposite of Hetchman. He also wears a hat. Despite being “old,” they are not necessarily old old. They are old in the way your math teacher could be fifty or ninety. Ageless. They also all speak with a quasi-Eastern European accent.

Voice - Late 20s to early 30s

A young woman. Strong, hard-working, either wise or smart, she doesn’t know yet. Hyperfixates.

Gabe/Golem - Age: Late 20s to early 30s

Gabe - Voice’s boyfriend. Easygoing in a way Voice has never been. Problem-solver…to a fault. Will also play Golem - A golem, a la the Jewish golem of Prague. Speaks through sounds; does intuit what is going on. Eats a lot. Made of mud. Has a strong male presence.

Wall - A wall, probably female, that speaks with a quasi-Eastern European accent. She has seen the history of this house and ventures to tell the story. Patient, or maybe not. The wall is realized in the play as an unseen voiceover, brought to life by scenic and theatrical magic.
