DIRECTOR
Area Premiere of A Strange Loop by Michael R. Jackson

Circle Theatre, Fort Worth, TX

Position: Director
Show: A Strange Loop by Michael R. Jackson (Area Premiere)
Rehearsals: May 18 – June 21, 2025
Performance Dates: June 21 – July 12, 2025
Stipend: $2,900; SDC Tier 3 Contract available

 

About the Production:
Circle Theatre is seeking a visionary director for the area premiere of A Strange Loop, the groundbreaking, Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award-winning musical by Michael R. Jackson. The show follows Usher, a Black queer musical theatre writer, as he grapples with his identity, creativity, and personal challenges while writing a musical about his own life. This bold and dynamic work explores themes of self-discovery, identity, and the complexities of the queer Black experience. We are looking for a director who can bring their unique voice and leadership to this powerful production and connect deeply with the material.

Rehearsal & Performance Timeline:

  • Rehearsals: May 18 – June 21, 2025

  • Performance Dates: June 21 – July 12, 2025

  • Auditions: Tentatively scheduled for late March 2025
     

Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with the artistic team to bring the vision of A Strange Loop to life on Circle Theatre’s stage.

  • Guide the creative process from the first rehearsal through opening night, ensuring a cohesive and compelling production.

  • Lead rehearsals, working closely with the Music Director, cast, and creative team to develop characters, blocking, and overall staging.

  • Participate in creative meetings with designers and technical staff to ensure the artistic integrity of the show.
     

Qualifications:

  • A strong background in directing musical theatre, with prior experience directing similar work preferred.

  • Passion for and understanding of the themes explored in A Strange Loop, including identity, self-expression, and the intersection of race and sexuality.

  • Strong leadership skills and the ability to collaborate with a creative team

About the Production:
Circle Theatre is seeking a Music Director for the area premiere of A Strange Loop, Michael R. Jackson’s Tony Award and Pulitzer Prize-winning musical. The show follows Usher, a Black queer musical theatre writer, navigating his identity and self-worth while writing a musical about his own life. This innovative work explores themes of identity, race, and the complexities of the queer Black experience through an electrifying score.

Rehearsal & Performance Timeline:

  • Rehearsals: May 18 – June 21, 2025

  • Auditions: Tentatively scheduled for late March 2025

 

Responsibilities:

  • Lead all musical rehearsals, ensuring that cast members are prepared vocally and musically for performances.

  • Work closely with the director to integrate the music and the action of the show, ensuring a cohesive artistic vision.

  • Teach and rehearse all vocal and instrument parts, ensuring high standards of musicality, tone, and precision.

  • Provide musical support during rehearsals and tech weeks.

 

Qualifications:

  • Experience as a music director for musical theatre, with a strong background in vocal coaching and musical rehearsal.

  • Proficiency in piano accompaniment and the ability to guide vocalists of various skill levels.

  • A deep understanding of A Strange Loop’s score and themes, with an appreciation for the intersection of musical and emotional storytelling.

Box Office + Administration

In this internship you will learn basic box office duties, house management, and customer service skills. All dates and times are subject to change based on run time of the show. Scheduling will be determined based on Circle's need and your availability. This internship pays $25/shift with up to four shifts per weekend.Responsibilities for this internship include prepping tickets for shows, working the Will Call window, assisting customers with the elevator, light cleaning duties, assisting with admin projects when needed, and ushering. Business professional attire is requested.
